Cyberbullies know that people crave
positive responses, as such, they work entirely the opposite. Once we succumb
to it, we will be at their mercy. Cyberbullies have shown that will continue
the bullying until the victims cave in. They may even persist until the victims
are emotionally and mentally damaged. This can lead to mental health
repercussions.

“We urge young people in Singapore not
to be bothered by comments made on social media or any other platform. You are
unique and you have a good family. There are more beautiful things in life to
appreciate. When you have it, they don’t and they won’t ever have it,” adds a
student of Carean Oh, who is writing for LEADnovate and interning at Writers
Studio School of English.
Social media a
breeding ground for cyberbullies
Yet, there are more subscribers to
social media than naysayers. In Singapore, it is not uncommon to see people
scrolling down their social media feeds while commuting to and fro from work or
school. Of course, many people may say that the current generation is glued to
their phones but some of the benefits of social media may say otherwise.
One benefit of social media is that it
allows us to expand our social network and circle. With social media, we could
keep up with the lives of our friends and still talk to them regularly, keeping
them as close friends. Yet, cyberbullies prowl the online space, contorting
readers’ minds and twisting written words to play to their advantage. They
enjoy comments made against false information. They gloat when people respond
to their actions. They get excited when people start cancelling out one
another. Isn’t this no different from vandals, abusers and physical attackers?
Social media can also allow us to raise awareness online especially in the area of social causes that will help create a more inclusive society here in Singapore. This could appeal to the charitable of others, allowing crowdfunding and spreading awareness of something in need of help. Sadly,
social media has recently morphed into a platform for promoting cancel culture.
Although it is not about social media being at fault, and it largely pertains
to human misbehaviour, social media has created the perfect opportunity. People
who wish to gather negative comments about others can gain support against
people they dislike overnight. News on social media is like lighting a fire on
a stack of paper. It spreads quickly. When someone spreads an opinion, the share,
like and comment functions that can support charitable and noble causes are now
being abused for negative reasons as well.
